Stammering therapy for children

Do not worry help is at hand. I am a former stammerer from England. I suffered with a speech impediment throughout my childhood before eventually managing to eradicate the stammer when I was aged twenty-two.

Since achieving fluency fourteen years ago I have been helping other people to "stop stammering". I run a speech centre here in the UK which is called The How To Stop Stammering Centre. I run one-to-one speech therapy courses and I also have a variety of self-help options available for people to purchase. These include an e-book, a DVD and an audio book.

ex-stammerersFor me the most difficult period for people who have a stammer is when they are at school. Having a stammer can make growing up quite hard especially at school and also when people are going through those troublesome teenage years.

If I only I had known the techniques back then! But some would say what is the point in looking back? I would have to agree with them - there is no point.

In reality I was not in a position to formulate the stuttering therapy techniques at this stage due to my age and the types of specialised stuttering treatment that are freely available today had not been started back then.

Do not get me wrong there is no quick fix to achieve fluency; it most certainly takes a lot of hard work and dedication; this is possibly something that I would not have been capable of as a teenager but I guess we will never know. The main thing is the fact that I was able to eventually find a solution and I can confirm that life is sure easier as a fluent person; it most certainly was worth all of the hard work and effort that I put in.

It goes without saying that not all children are willing or able to put in the required effort to achieve fluency; however with the help and guidance of their parents specialised therapy should still be of major benefit to them.
